Silent vs. Oral Reading

Oral Fluency Reads aloud smoothly and with appropriate expression. Reads smoothly most of the time. May use finger pointing, rereading, or hesitations as strategies. Reading contains frequent stops or repetitions. May lose his or her place.
Silent Fluency Reads faster silently than orally. Stays focussed on the text. Silent and oral reading rate is approximately the same. May lose focus from text or use finger pointing to maintain attention. Silent reading is slower than oral reading and is distracted easily. May need to read aloud to self to understand.
Comprehension Understands and interprets text with ease. There is no difference between oral and silent reading comprehension. Can answer literal and objective questions adequately. There may be some discrepancies between oral and silent reading comprehension. Has difficulty answering even literal questions. There is a notable difference between the comprehension of oral and silent reading.
